UFC Quick Quote: Takanori Gomi could knock out BJ Penn — if Dana White wasn’t so hard to deal with

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

“I want to fight BJ Penn again. He knows I’m the unique guy of this division able to knock him out. It would be the biggest champions fighting. Imagine how this match would be … but it’s not close to coming true. I don’t want to talk over UFC … Mr. Dana White is a great manager and I respect him but is a person hard to deal with. I’m not an art martial beginner, I am a MMA champion. What about him? What would he be?”

-- Former Pride FC lightweight deity Takanori Gomi talks to Tsutaya Online about his fighting future as he prepares for Tony Hervey at Vale Tudo Japan 2009 on Oct. 30. “The Fireball Kid” flirted with a stateside move a few years ago when Zuffa — the UFC parent company — purchased the Japan-based mixed martial arts promotion; however, he decided to stay loyal and close to home, competing in front of the fans who watched him ascend to stardom in the “Land of the Rising Sun.” He was persuaded once again to fight on US soil until Affliction MMA collapsed and left him high and dry. Will he ever compete for the UFC? And if so, does he have any chance of avenging his 2003 submission loss to current lightweight champion BJ Penn?

BJ Penn: ‘I definitely want to fight GSP again’

“I definitely want to fight GSP again. I’m biased and I have confidence in myself and I don’t think the fight would go anything like that if we fought again. I’ve got to defend the lightweight title and take on all challenges that make me better but if I get a chance to fight GSP again — even if it was a non-title fight — I’d jump at the opportunity. There will always be people to beat and as the lightweight champion I have to honor that and keep defending the title. But as a businessman you hope it’s someone with a big name who can bring a big fan base into the fight. This is a business — it’s the entertainment business and the biggest fights that can be put together will only benefit me. I am surprised Georges St. Pierre hasn’t tried to push for a fight with Anderson Silva. If I was the welterweight champion I’d try and push myself and see what I could do up at middleweight.”

Despite the fact that he’s heading into a very dangerous fight with Diego Sachez on Dec. 12, UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn is still hoping to get revenge on reigning welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre — as well as other “superfights” before he hangs up the gloves for good. “The Prodigy” will put his 155-pound title on the line once again when he faces the “Nightmare” at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., and if he gets past the former TUF star, expect the GSP chatter to intensify. Anyone interested in a third go-round?

BJ Penn: A ‘burnt-out’ Rampage could return to the UFC and fight again

“Fighting wears on you — especially in this sport — so everybody wants to get the big break and do some stuff outside of the sport. That whole Rampage thing is amazing. I think he is perfect for the role. If anybody can do it, he can — but I want to see him with a Mohawk! I hope everything works out for him — but you could see him back in the UFC. Dana’s a forgiving guy and I’m sure Rampage is too so I can see him fighting again. I hope this movie thing really works out for him though. He is a little burnt out but it’d be awesome to see him settle his differences with Rashad one day.”

– UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn weighs in on the sudden departure of former light heavyweight champion and Ultimate Fighter 10 coach Quinton Jackson. “Rampage” bailed on his UFC 107 showdown with Rashad Evans after landing the role of BA Baracus in the upcoming movie remake of “The A-Team.” Will a burned out Jackson eventually return to the UFC, reinvigorated and ready to settle his differences with “Sugar?” Or has Rampage gone Hollywood once and for all? And if he does come back — will anyone still care?
