This weekend, Fedor Emelianenko garnered the attention of the MMA fans across America in his Strikeforce debut on network television.

Unbeknown to many, the man whom he was slated to fight in the heavyweight dream match that evaporated in the fateful few days in July also resurfaced in victorious fashion — albeit in a far more arcane corner of the MMA fandom.

Josh Barnett took the tournament gold in the ultra heavyweight/pessadisimo (over 215 pounds) division among the blackbelts at the World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship 2009 held at California State University in Long Beach, Calif., on Nov. 8. In the tournament final, Barnett bested Ralph Gracie pupil, Bruno Paulista.

Paulista had an impressive showing against the larger Barnett — he demonstrated nifty guardwork, locking up Barnett and threatening him with triangle choke from high guard and arm bar via knee bar feint. Despite struggling to pass Paulista’s guard, Barnett defended well against his submission attempts and kept up the pressure throughout the 10 minute contest.

In the end, Barnett received the judge’s nod.

In his own words regarding his victory at the tournament:

“I’m the 2009 No-Gi BJJ World Champion. Thanks to all for the support and to my opponents as well. Catch Wrestling lives!”

Barnett was pulled from the headlining bout against Emelianenko at Affliction “Trilogy” after testing positive for anabolic steroid in the pre-fight drug test. The event was canceled a few days later and the promotional demise followed in the wake.

Though his return to Sengoku had been rumored, his status with the organization remains uncertain. He has been granted a second extension for an appeals hearing that he had requested after the California State Athletic Commission denied his re-licensure due to the outcome of the aforementioned drug test.

The new hearing will be held on Dec. 8.

MMA Quick Quote: Brett Rogers gets advice from, and trains with, Josh Barnett for Fedor Emelianenko fight

”Keep moving. Never, never stay still. Keep moving, and you’ll always find some way, some pocket, to get out of a bad situation. Especially when it comes to a ground situation.”

Words of wisdom from former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Josh Barnett, as he helps Brett Rogers prepare to take on the world’s best heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, at Strikeforce: “Fedor vs. Rogers” at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on Nov. 7. Of course, Barnett was supposed to fight Fedor earlier this year at Affliction: “Trilogy;” however, he tested positive for banned substances prior to the match and the bout was scrapped. Barnett competed alongside the Russian for several years under the Pride FC banner and is among the most intelligent fighters in the sport today. If anyone can help Rogers gameplan effectively for Emelianenko it’s certainly Barnett. In fact, he may even be over qualified. But will it be enough for Rogers to overcome years of experience and a much more well rounded skill set?

Josh Barnett receives second extension for CSAC steroid appeal

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Affliction Grim Reaper and former PRIDE star Josh Barnett has applied for — and received — a second extension for his appeal directed towards the ruling of the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) after he was popped for steroids in a random drug test prior to his August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko, according to Sherdog.com.

“The Babyface Assassin” returned a positive “B” sample on July 31, all but confirming his initial test result that began a downward spiral for his employer and fellow fighters.

Barnett’s positive test led to Affliction MMA’s house of cards to come crashing down, calling it quits as a fight promoter and returning to the UFC as a corporate sponsor with its clothing brand. Several intriguing fights were scrapped as a result, forcing fighters to search for work elsewhere … Barnett included.

The former UFC Heavyweight champion issued a press release last month, calling into question the integrity of those results alleged by the CSAC — who does have a fairly sordid history dating back to the Sean Sherk scandal and beyond.

From his official press release:

Mr. Barnett was shocked at these allegations and was extremely disappointed to learn that Affliction had made the hasty decision to cancel the August 1st event in its entirety. Mr. Barnett vehemently denies intentionally ingesting any banned substances in preparation for the August 1st fight and he is looking forward to presenting his case to the California State Athletic Commission.

Barnett is appealing this most recent steroid finding with the CSAC but was likely counting on his second “B” sample to help dispute the initial positive result.

In light of this new development, Barnett will not be eligible to reapply for a  license to fight in the United States for at least a year, forcing him to remain exiled in Japan until then. With a FieLDS Dynamite!! card looming and a successful wrestling career; however, it may not be too difficult to find work.

Keep in locked on MMAmania.com as we’ll let you know more on Barnett’s future when it’s announced.
