“Fighting in the Octagon is more demanding on your body (than the NFL). The pain that you go through over a short period of time, all the training that you have to do for just 15 minutes of fighting, to me, that’s just incredibly difficult … I do wish I had started MMA at an earlier age. I ask myself, if I would have started jiu-jitsu in my 20s, can you imagine what kind of fighter I’d be today? I’m a much better fighter now than I was during my first fight. In my first fight, I barely knew how to throw a jab. Now I feel comfortable fighting anybody.”

– Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end, Marcus Jones, talks to MMA Fanhouse about his transition from the gridiron to the cage. So far the 36-year-old former first-round draft pick has done well, winning four of five fights with just two years of mixed martial arts training under his belt. However, he — along with three other NFL veterans, including Matt Mitrione, Brendan Schaub and Wes Shivers — will face their toughest tests to date on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, who himself failed to make the Minnesota Vikings roster several years back, is proof the raw power, determination and athleticism (not to mention an accomplished amateur wrestling career) can take a fighter to the pinnacle of the sport. But is Lesnar the exception? Or can we expect similar specimens to follow in his footsteps and achieve comparable results?
