“Melvin Guillard is a tough guy. He already showed everybody he has heavy hands. His wrestling is excellent, he knows how to put people down but I’m training a lot of boxing and wrestling. Sure thing I can’t exchange with him since he has knocked out some guys. I will fight on the floor. I’m training boxing to cheat my opponent and take him down. He made the main event of UFC Fight Night so UFC threw me in a fire proof. I’ll be prepared. I’m still calm for the fight, it doesn’t seem like a debut. But I think when it’s near I’ll get nervous, even when I am training inside the octagon the legs will shake out. All fighters who debuted at UFC told me that, so it won’t be different with me. I know I will feel the pressure but God knows my future. I will pass some nights waken thinking about this fight.”
Nova Uniao-trained Ronny Torres anticipates the heavy hands of Melvin Guillard when he meets “The Young Assassin” at UFC 109 in early 2010. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt is an impressive 14-1 outside of the promotion and looks to carry that momentum into his pending UFC debut. Don’t expect a very warm welcome from Guillard, who’s probably tired of dominating fighters only to lose by submission. Will this time be any different?

Sitting in the Harris County jail in Houston was the low point for me. I thought the UFC was going to cut me. But Dana White gave me a second chance to get my life cleaned up. I had to get my life turned around. My dad died. He was only 44, and I didn’t know how to reach out for help. I turned to drugs. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to make excuses and say I turned to drugs because my dad died. But I did. It was the wrong choice. I hid my pain … I can’t make people change their minds. I believe in showing people rather than telling them. I’m going to show people that I’ve put that part of my life behind me.
UFC Fight Night 19 headliner Melvin Guillard is ready to show UFC fans that his past will not interfere with his future as a formidable threat to the 155-pound division, starting with his Sept. 16 bout against Nate Diaz. “The Young Assassin” had his share of troubles inside of the Octagon (and out) but lately has managed to get his life and career back on track. A big win over a name like Diaz and Guillard is right back in the thick of things. Can he do it?
