UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre is healthy, ready for Mike Swick or Dan Hardy

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Georges St Pierre

“My injury is 100 percent now, I’m ready to go. I’m waiting to see what’s going to happen next with the UFC…. I look forward to fighting again and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen between Swick and Hardy…. It doesn’t matter who I’m fighting, it’s always dangerous. I learned my mistake when I fought Matt Serra, who was a big underdog. I’m the kind of person who never makes the same mistake twice…. [Dan Hardy is] a great fighter, he really deserves it. … He’s got very lethal, very powerful hands. He can knock you out with one punch. It’s always a big danger when you fight a guy like him…. Mike Swick is very very fast, has probably the fastest hands in MMA. A very accurate puncher, he’s very well-rounded so it’s going to be a very interesting fight. They both have the tools to beat each other. I think the winner of this fight will be the guy who has the best strategy and who fights the smartest.”

– UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre informs the Canadian Press that he has completely recovered from a groin injury sustained during a five-round battle with Thiago Alves back at UFC 100 back in July. “Rush” refined his stand up skills while nursing his abductor ligament back to full strength. And now he’s apparently back in the gym, training full strength in preparation for his next title defense in early 2010. It will likely come against the winner of the 170-pound showdown between Mike Swick and Dan Hardy at UFC 105 next weekend. Any preferences on St. Pierre’s next opponent, Maniacs?

UFC Quick Quote: Brock Lesnar still sick, return could be delayed until Feb. 6

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

brock_lesnar_training

“I’m not sure exactly what it is he has, mono or whatever, but I know that he was sick and couldn’t get a good, hard workout in. There’s a big difference between making an appearance and smiling and waving at a football game and going out and doing what he has to do in his training.”

– Greg Nelson, the founder, owner and head coach at the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in Minneapolis, Minn., tells Yahoo!Sports.com that his biggest fighter, UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar, is still not well. Lesnar was recently forced to withdraw from his upcoming title fight against number one contender, Shane Carwin, at UFC 106 on Nov. 21. It was a difficult decision that did not sit well with most fans, setting off a firestorm on conspiracy theories that Lesnar wasn’t really sick, but just preferred to fight on the blockbuster year-end show, UFC 108, which is scheduled for Jan. 2, 2010. Most of those Oliver Stones pointed to Lesnar’s appearance at a Minnesota Vikings football game as proof that his illness was hogwash. Nelson defends Lesnar, saying that he has been unable to train hard because of the mysterious malady. In fact, he even indicates that Lesnar still has not returned to full strength and that he may have to postpone his return until the Superbowl weekend event in early February.

MMA Quick Quote: ‘Whore Machine’ starts new porn career off with a Riley Steele bang

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

warmachine_riley_steele

“I signed with LA Direct Models this week and today I did my first porn scene! LOL. I shot for Digital Playground with their girl Riley Steele … was fucking awesome! I was nervous but I came through. I’m still gonna fight … just gonna do this too because fighting isn’t quite enough money and you all know I ain’t trying to work! In life I have come to learn that all I enjoy is eating, sleeping, fighting and fucking! I’m living the dream getting paid to fight and fuck! What more could I ask for?

– UFC reject and MMA’s favorite controversial loose cannon, “War Machine” (the fighter previously known as John Koppenhaver), has embarked on a new venture. In yet another instance of MMA fighter’s diverging from his fight career to undertake extracurricular activities, he has set a new precedent. Care to respond to Mr. War Machine’s question, Maniacs?

MMA Quick Quote: Brett Rogers gets advice from, and trains with, Josh Barnett for Fedor Emelianenko fight

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

rogers_barnett

”Keep moving. Never, never stay still. Keep moving, and you’ll always find some way, some pocket, to get out of a bad situation. Especially when it comes to a ground situation.”

Words of wisdom from former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Josh Barnett, as he helps Brett Rogers prepare to take on the world’s best heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, at Strikeforce: “Fedor vs. Rogers” at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., on Nov. 7. Of course, Barnett was supposed to fight Fedor earlier this year at Affliction: “Trilogy;” however, he tested positive for banned substances prior to the match and the bout was scrapped. Barnett competed alongside the Russian for several years under the Pride FC banner and is among the most intelligent fighters in the sport today. If anyone can help Rogers gameplan effectively for Emelianenko it’s certainly Barnett. In fact, he may even be over qualified. But will it be enough for Rogers to overcome years of experience and a much more well rounded skill set?

UFC Quick Quote: Ed Soares manages Bentleys, not Toyotas

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Anderson Silva Big Nog

“We don’t have a tremendous amount of guys in comparison to some who are out there. I’ve seen some management companies with 60, 70 guys that they’re representing. I kind of look at it as a car dealership. When you look at the car dealership, well, thank God there are Toyota dealers. There’s nothing wrong with Toyotas. They’re great cars, reliable cars, but there are 3,000 of them on the lot. Walk into a Bentley dealership, though, and there are only 12, 15 cars in the place. There are two things about that: The guy’s walking in to buy the car, and you know they’re not going to be negotiating price when they’re buying a Bentley. And that’s how I feel about our fighters. You want one of our fighters, you’re going to get a high-performance fighter. I like to keep it that way…. We have what I consider our ‘Three Kings.’ Anderson Silva is the pound-for-pound king. Lyoto is the king of karate, and we have Nogueira, who is the king of heart because he has so much heart. Those are our three big cards. In a card game, if I were playing poker and I had three kings, I’d think I had a pretty good hand.”

– Ed Soares talks to Yahoo!Sports.com about his path to becoming a manager and spokesperson for several of the top mixed martial artists on the planet. The Portuguese-speaking 37-year-old prefers quality over quantity when it comes to fighters who he represents. And with his “Three Kings” from Brazil it’s clear that he and his partner have a recipe for success. Of course, his job is not all sunshine and roses. He often finds himself caught up in the middle of various difficult situations — look no further than Anderson Silva’s win over Thales Leites and Lyoto Machida’s decision over Shogun Rua for proof of that. Nonetheless, his fighters win more than they lose, making Soares one of the more successful and high profile managers in the sport today. Will that success continue in early 2010 when Silva is supposed to take on Vitor Belfort or will he keep him parked in the garage until something better rolls around?

UFC Quick Quote: Rampage Jackson ‘ashamed’ of ‘assholes’

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

rampage

“The UFC looked like assholes this weekend. The main event was boring. I anticipated that because let’s be real … Machida is a boring fighter. But Shogun getting robbed like that was pretty cutthroat…. Most of the people from the ‘A-Team movie’ were just watching it because I was watching it and they don’t know much about MMA and were starting to get into it, but [Saturday] night they didn’t have anything good to say about my sport. So I was so ashamed…. The UFC needs to get some new judges before I even think about coming back. I want the hardcore fans to go back and watch all the fights that you thought was kinda shady with the judges in the UFC and TUF and write down the names of the judges so you guys can complain and have a voice. Do your homework. This sport wouldn’t be what it is without the fans. It’s hard for me to believe that the UFC is so successful and has over 100 shows and can’t tell who wins a fight.”

– Former light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson isn’t very happy with the three judges who awarded Lyoto Machida a unanimous decision win over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua this weekend at UFC 104. Jackson, like a majority of fans, felt that Shogun was the clear-cut winner, which wasn’t the case when the decision was read. He admits that he was actually ashamed with the result while in the company of his “A-Team” castmates, who were more than likely getting their first tastes of what mixed martial arts is all about. Jackson, who prematurely retired from the sport to pursue an acting career, indicates that he won’t return to competition until the UFC hires new, more competent judges. Unfortunately, the UFC doesn’t hire judges (the athletic commissions handle that responsibility), making Jackson’s request impossible.

UFC Quick Quote: Frank Trigg vs Tomato Can coming soon to an Octagon near you?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Trigg vs Can

“If my next fight is Serra, it’s going to be a loser leave town match cause he is on a 2-fight losing streak, so that would be 3 fights in a row that he lost and for me, it would be a 2-fight losing streak if I lost and I’m out. One of us is going to have to go home. If I fight somebody else and I lose, I’m going to have to leave regardless because I would have 2 losses. I would like for them to give me a tomato can, like some low-level martial artist, so I can beat the crap out of somebody for a change and get a win streak going, but the way they work with me, it’s going to be somebody tough no matter who it is.”

– Former number one welterweight contender, Frank Trigg, tells FightHype.com that he’s got one more chance to prove he still belongs with the rest of the contenders in the UFC welterweight division. Josh Koscheck welcomed “Twinkle Toes” back to the Octagon after more than four years away from the promotion with a first round technical knockout at UFC 103 back on Sept. 19. Rumors have been swirling about a possible showdown with Matt Serra in early 2010; however, nothing is official at this time. Win or lose, does Trigg deserve the chance to finish out the remaining fights on his contract? Or is the 37-year-old fighter better off calling it quits if he drops two straight? Opinions please.

WEC Quick Quote: Ben Henderson ‘definitely’ beat Donald Cerrone

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

cerrone_henderson_choke

“No excuses. I take my hat off to the guy. He did what he had to do. No excuses. It was a great fight and I’m ready to do it again anytime … I think he won the fight. Some people say it might not have gone that way, but he definitely won the fight.”

– Donald Cerrone tips his cap to Ben Henderson, saying “Smooth” did enough in their five-round, back-and-forth battle to earn the unanimous decision from the judges sitting ringside. “Cowboy” admits that he got off to a slow start — despite several tight submission attempts in the early going — which more than likely cost him the interim lightweight title, as well as rematch against his nemesis, 155-pound champion Jamie Varner, in the near future. But it was close. Real close. And there are more than a handful of fans who thought Cerrone should have had his hand raised when all was said and done. Are you one of them … or do you agree with the cowboy? Talk about one helluva fight.

UFC Quick Quote: Shane Carwin is a ‘fighter,’ Brock Lesnar is a ‘draw’

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

lesnar_brock

“I feel like I have paid my dues and so have a lot of fighters waiting for their shot. Brock is what they call a ‘Draw,’ he sells tickets, I am what they call a ‘Fighter,’ I fight who I am told to fight the way my coaches train me too. We are different people and we treat people different. To me this sport is as much about respect and honor as it is paychecks sound bites.”

– Shane Carwin sounds off in a recent interview with FiveOuncesofPain.com about his simmering feud with UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. The war of words kicked off when Carwin criticized Lesnar’s questionable post-fight antics after defeating Frank Mir earlier this year. Lesnar has responded in kind, saying Carwin “hasn’t fought anybody” and that he’s just a Division II wrestler. At this rate, the back-and-forth will more than likely come to a boil way before the pair is locked inside the Octagon together at UFC 106 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Nov. 21. Will the fight live up to the hype?
