Anderson Silva’s elbow + Vitor Belfort’s weight = UFC 108 trouble

That’s the latest ominous word from “The Spider” camp”

“They found some things that they weren’t aware of (during the surgery), which is a good thing. If we’re going to be fighting for the title, we want to make sure Anderson’s 100-percent…. Vitor has not fought in the UFC at 185 pounds. Now, I know people can say Anderson fought for the belt after one fight, and that’s true, but he fought at 185 pounds. At 195 pounds, he didn’t make weight, at first. So he couldn’t make weight at 195 pounds, but now he’s going to fight for the title at 185 pounds?”

Ed Soares, who manages Silva, indicated that out of respect for company president Dana White that they will accept the UFC 108 match, which is scheduled for Jan. 2, 2010, despite their reservations about Belfort’s weighty issues (although he competed twice at 185 pounds before the 195-pound catchweight fight against Rich Franklin last month). Ultimately, he said, it’s a “doctor’s decision” that should come within the next 10 days. Until then, we wait. Impatiently.

UFC 108: Will Vitor Belfort exchange blows with Anderson Silva?

If that’s the gameplan of “The Phenom,” which he says it is, “The Spider” doesn’t think that’s such a good idea:

“I don’t think he would want to [fight standing]. No one would trade punches with me. If I were to fight someone of jiu-jitsu, I would not go to the floor.

Middleweight Muay Thai mauler, Anderson Silva, will be surprised if Vitor Belfort opts to mix it up standing when the two Brazilians collide inside the Octagon at UFC 108 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2. Belfort has indicated that he intends to do what he does best, which is go for the knockout. He clearly has quick hands and great boxing. And he’s demonstrated that recently with three straight convincing wins via punches. But Silva is so dangerous on his feet — nine of his 10 wins inside the eight-walled cage have come by way of (technical) knockout. He’s a human wrecking machine. Is Belfort the one who can finally hurt Silva upright, or will he be just another victim?

UFC Quick Quote: Anderson Silva will destroy Vitor Belfort on Jan. 2

anderson silva best pound for pound fighter in UFC

“I believe Anderson would destroy Belfort. I think it’s a very interesting fight. Belfort has good boxing skills and is a good athlete, but everybody knows that he has a weak psychological aspect and I think he will shake when he gets in the Octagon with (Silva). Let’s see if (Belfort) will put his new karate … I mean old karate, new for him, in practice against Anderson.”

– Wanderlei Silva provides Sherdog.com with his prediction for the middleweight match up between 185-pound kingpin, Anderson Silva, and former light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, which is scheduled for UFC 108 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2. “The Phenom” finished the “The Axe Murderer” in just 44 seconds more than a decade ago at UFC 17.5: “Ultimate Brazil,” but that isn’t stopping him from picking his former Chute Boxe training partner to score a decisive victory. Agree or disagree, Maniacs?

UFC 108: Anderson Silva vs Vitor Belfort agree to fight in Las Vegas on Jan. 2

Move over Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt … it looks like Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has finally decided on the next middleweight contender to challenge its reigning division champion, Anderson Silva.

Los Angeles Times reports that former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort has verbally agreed to saunter into “The Spider” web at UFC 108, which is scheduled to take place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010.

Henderson actually appeared to be the front runner to challenge Silva after his most recent — and emphatic — victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 100. Company president Dana White indicated that it was enough to earn him another crack at the Brazilian; however, his manager, Ed Soares, made the case that Henderson should take on Nate Marquardt first to determine a clear-cut contender.

That now appears to be the plan. And it’s likely that the recent addition of Belfort to the 185-pound roster had a lot to do with it.

“The Phenom” is coming off a first round destruction of former division champ Rich Franklin on Sept. 19 in Dallas. The stoppage — coupled with his two devastating knockout wins under the Affliction banner — were enough to convince White that “The Old Vitor” is back and ready to face his fellow countryman.

It’s a tall order, considering Silva hasn’t really lost in more than five years (sans a disqualification loss to Yushin Okami in 2006), and he’s essentially obliterated the middleweight division since entering the Zuffa fold in mid 2006.

In fact, he’s been so good that White and Co. have started to match him up against 205-pound fighters to give him more of a challenge. He passed with flying colors, sending former champion Forrest Griffin running for the hills and pasting James Irvin with a highlight-reel, fighting-ending combination.

Silva has not had a solid (perhaps trademark is a better term) performance in the middleweight division since he submitted Henderson at UFC 82: “Pride of a Champion” back in March 2008. He’s had two forgettable — albeit winning — fights against Patrick Cote and Thales Leites since that time.

It’s safe to say that the promotion is looking to Belfort to bring the excitement back to the middleweight division … win, lose or draw.

UFC 108 is expected to serve as the promotion’s traditional “year-end” event because the Christmas holiday falls on the last weekend of 2009. No other potential match ups are known at this time; however, UFC typically likes to go out with a bang so expect more goodness in the near future.

UFC Quick Quote: Vitor Belfort is coming for Anderson Silva

Friday, September 25th, 2009

“Vitor is a different person now. He really is. He’s not that spoiled kid that we saw back in the day when he was building his career and got ahead of himself. His head is in the game, he’s very focused and he’s very secure with where he is in the game right now. Rich Franklin is no easy competitor. That told us right there where he’s at. We’re coming after Anderson Silva and that belt!”

– Xtreme Couture trainer Shawn Tompkins talks to FightHype.com about the future of Vitor Belfort in the middleweight division — specifically his place in line for the 185-pound crown, currently held by fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva. “The Phenom” is coming off a first round destruction of former division champ Rich Franklin at UFC 103 on Sept. 19 in Dallas. The stoppage — coupled with his wins in Affliction — were enough to convince Tompkins that “The Old Vitor” is back and ready to face “The Spider.” But was it enough to convince the fans?

Dana White: Vitor Belfort is ready to fight Anderson Silva

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

“The question that I had coming into this fight was, ‘What Vitor were we gonna see? The explosive Vitor that wants to get somebody hurt, who goes right after them, or the Vitor that lays back and couldn’t pull the trigger? He pulled the trigger tonight, and as soon as he hurt [Franklin], he went right in for the kill. Vitor is a 185-pound fighter, that’s his weight division. To be honest with you, the way that the last two fights happened with Marquardt and Henderson against Anderson Silva, I think it would be better to see them fight each other, and the winner of that become the next contender. I think Vitor’s ready. I think Vitor’s ready to fight Anderson Silva.”

– UFC President Dana White sounds off during the UFC 103 post fight press conference on the future of Vitor Belfort in the middleweight division — specifically his place in line for the 185-pound crown, currently held by fellow Brazilian Anderson Silva. “The Phenom” is coming off a first round destruction of former division champ Rich Franklin on Sept. 19 in Dallas. The stoppage — coupled with his wins in Affliction — were enough to convince White that “The Old Vitor” is back and ready to face “The Spider.” But was it enough to convince the fans? Opinions please.
