LAS VEGAS (October 21, 2009) – XYIENCE, the official energy drink of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), brings legendary fighter Wanderlei Silva to New York City on Sunday, Oct. 25. Silva will sign autographs at Duane Reade, located on 1350 Broadway, near Herald Square, from noon – 2 p.m.
The Brazilian-born Silva has achieved iconic status in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), stacking up 32 wins, most of them by knockout, in his illustrious career. Silva’s appearance coincides with the MMA World Expo, to be held Oct. 24 – 25 at the Javits Center in New York City.
XYIENCE’s Xenergy Premium hit the shelves of Duane Reade stores in Manhattan just two months ago, as a result of the brand’s relationship with New York-based Exclusive Beverage Distribution. The distributor, established in 1960 with more than 250 stores in commercial and residential neighborhoods of New York, anticipates a large turnout for the event.
Through its sponsorship of the UFC, the XYIENCE brand reaches 420 million households worldwide. UFC 111 video: Wanderlei Silva ‘honored’ to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama in Australia on Feb. 20

Quoteworthy:
“Master Rafael [Cordeiro is] two or three years older than me and when I started, he was already a black belt. He’s very ugly, but he was famous and had a beautiful girlfriend, so it gave me hope that I could do well one day too. He was very good in fights and Muay Thai, then he started in jiu-jitsu and did great too, then in Karate too. He’s very talented. I never saw a guy more talented in training or leading the training. Rafael was unbelievable. On the other hand, Pelé also inspired me. He was the baddest man I every met. I never met a guy as bad as he is. We had no way of training with him. He beat you up in training and didn’t care.”
Former Pride FC Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva talks about the road to mixed martial arts stardom that began back in Brazil under some pretty difficult circumstances. The 34-year-old “Axe Murderer” has lost five of his last six fights, dating back to 2006. He hasn’t been fighting creampuffs; however, and banked a “Fight of the Night” bonus for his war with Rich Franklin at UFC 99. Where does he go with a win over Yoshihiro Akiyama if and when they meet in early 2010? More importantly, where does he go with a loss?
Yoshihiro Akiyama: I’m fighting Wanderlei Silva in early 2010
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Yoshihiro Akiyama, a fourth-generation Japanese-born Korean who made his Zuffa debut at UFC 100, will bring a lethal dose of sexiness to the Octagon in early 2010 in hopes of dulling the blade of Brazilian “Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva.
“Sexyama” made the announcement earlier today during a news conference for the UFC’s “Undisputed” video game release in the far east and comes courtesy of Sherdog.com.
While no date or event is official, the former DREAM and K-1 star hinted at UFC 110 in Las Vegas and UFC 111 in Australia as probable front-runners for the proposed throwdown.
A world class Judoka, Akiyama made his name in K-1 Hero’s, compiling an undefeated record (11-0, 1 NC). After FEG pulled the plug on Hero’s, he fought twice in the newly formed DREAM in 2008 before signing with UFC. He made his Octagon debut a successful one, narrowly edging out Alan Belcher via split decision on July 11.
Will he be sexy enough for one of the sport’s most ruthless aggressors?
On the heels of his recent facial surgery, Wandy could return with a level of sexiness all his own. Even though Silva has lost five of his last six fights, he’s an extremely aggressive and dangerous fighter who is capable of ending things early.
In fact, “The Axe Murderer” has a technical knockout percentage of more than 70 in his 43 professional mixed martial arts bouts — and even when he loses — he always comes to fight.
Expect fireworks in this one.

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009UFC Quick Quote: Wanderlei Silva could look like Angelina Jolie with a little more work
Sunday, September 13th, 2009
”Man, he’s more handsome (laughs)… I said to him, ‘Wanderlei, you’re much more handsome … If you had long hair and a pretty mouth, you’d be like Angelina Jolie (laughs).’ But he’s ok, he did that surgery because of a nose problem and that’s important. The rest is rest, the guys joke with him and that’s normal.”
– UFC Middlweight Champion Anderson Silva has a little fun with the new looks of his Brazilian counterpart, Wanderlei Silva, in a recent interview with Tatame.com. Not too long ago the Silvas entered into a war of words when the “Axe Murderer” announced his plans to compete in the 185-pound division, setting off heated back-and-forth banter that made it seem as if a major rift was created between the former training partners. That’s no longer the case — “The Spider” indicates that it was just a “misunderstanding” and that everything is now “okay.” So “okay” that Anderson can joke about Wanderlei’s recent procedure on his face, which he underwent to remove scar tissue around his eyes to avoid future cuts and fix his nose to correct a sleep apnea problem. He certainly does look a little different, but the “Lara Croft” similarity might be reaching just a bit … don’t ya think?
